Rise of the TMNT Character Designs

It's Rise of the TMNT day!

Here are the final character designs for the new show, launching later this year!

Raphael (Omar Miller) is now the leader and oldest brother, a snapping turtle who brandishes twin tonfas as his weapons.

Leonardo (Ben Schwartz) is a red-eared slider who boasts "irreverent charm and a rebel heart." Weapon of choice: ōdachi sword.

Box turtle/skateboarder/artist Michelangelo (Brandon Mychal Smith) is the youngest brother — and dangerous with a kusari-fundo.

Soft-shell turtle and tech hero Donatello (Josh Brener) rocks a tech-bo staff and impressive coding skills.

The first African-American April O'Neil (Kath Graham) is a savvy New Yorker and first human ally of the turtles.

Splinter (Eric Bauza) is part father figure, all sensei to the turtles.

Behind-the-Scenes Video with New "Rise of the TMNT" Voice Actors

Just a day after announcing the new principal voice actors in next year's new "Rise of the TMNT" series, Nickelodeon has released a short video with clips of the new cast. If you pay attention, you can also see Rob Paulsen in the director's booth, doing his new directing thing!

"Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" stars Kat Graham as April O’Neil, Josh Brener as Donatello, Omar Miller as Raphael, Brandon Mychal Smith as Michelangelo, Ben Schwartz as Leonardo, and is expected to premiere in Fall 2018.

Everything We Know About "Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles"

In March, Nickelodeon announced that the current TMNT CGI series would be replaced next year by a new 2D-animated series, "Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." The series will be headed by Andy Suriano (character designer for Samurai Jack) and Ant Ward (supervising producer of the 2012 series). "Rise of the TMNT" is said to be lighter and more humor-oriented than the 2012 series.

There has been a blurry reveal of the new logo via Twitter user @TMNTfan86:

UPDATE: The first official details, including the voice cast, have been revealed! Read about it here!

NOTE: The following 4chan "leaks" are confirmed FAKE by Nickelodeon Animation Studios. I am keeping it posted here to keep clear what is and isn't confirmed.

A couple of 4chan users, who are said to have inside knowledge of Nickelodeon studios, stated we can expect:
  • 2D animation, said to be in the vein of Motorcity, FLCL/Gainax
  • More humor oriented than the last one, no clue to what extent
  • The turtles are going to have some sort of mystical powers. Think Ninja Tribunal from the 4kids series. It ties into their origin somehow, which is supposedly pretty different. They have stones in their belts that help them channel their energy. Probably a toy gimmick
  • The turtle designs are like Mirage meets the Michael Bay movies. They all look pretty similar except for Donny’s goggles, Leo’s got some armor, Raph has the du-rag like in the new movies, and Michelangelo’s got some “cool” accessories
  • Splinter plays a much lesser role
  • April is a teenager again, looks a bit like the current version but with really puffy pigtails and she’s sorta chubby. And she has a sword
  • There is no Shredder in this series. Not sure if that’s just at first or a permanent thing
  • Pizza is literally the turtles’ biggest weakness now. They have to deal with how it negatively affects their focus and physical condition
  • No word on voice cast yet
This supposed character design for Donatello is also 100% fake. The new designs are actually said to be nothing close to this.

Expect the new designs to be officially revealed next February during Toy Fair.

TMNT Guide to Comic-Con 2016

It's that time of year again! Yes, Comic-Con starts TOMORROW!

Life has been a bit of a whirlwind the last few months, which has sadly kept me from providing updates that I should have been posting. (If you would like the "picture is worth a thousand words" short version, you can see picture 1 and picture 2.) And, unfortunately, because of this, I also don't have my regular, detailed "TMNT Guide to Comic-Con" put together to the extent that I would like. I will kind of be flying by the seat of my pants this year, but I will still be there and I will be updating regularly with all the TMNT news and information I can find.

Here are some quick highlights to look forward to:

Panels dedicated to Nickelodeon's TMNT series (Friday) and IDW's TMNT series (Saturday).

You can check out Kevin Eastman's panel and autograph schedule right here.

The Nickelodeon autograph session will be Friday 1-2:30pm. Be sure to visit the booth earlier in the show to find out when ticket distribution will be—you will need a ticket to attend the autograph sessions!

There are quite a few TMNT exclusive items available for sale! NECA has their amazing TMNT video game figures, and you'll also find exclusive items at the Nickelodeon booth, IDW, Kid Robot, HeroClix, The Loyal Subjects, Mattel, and Bluefin.

And Usagi Yojimbo fans will want to be sure to visit Stan Sakai's booth to pick up the new Usagi Yojimbo coloring book!

TMNT Master on Twitter made this cryptic tweet! (Sounds like something for TMNT fans to check out!)

And Andre the Black Nerd made this awesome video previewing the Kubros exclusive sets that will be available from Mattel.

If you watched through the end, you caught that the Mega Bloks booth will be handing out a free TMNT Mega Bloks comic! Be sure you get one!

Did I miss something? Let me know!

And be sure to follow Ninja Pizza on Facebook and/or Twitter, as that is where all of my "as it happens" updates will be happening throughout the weekend! (Honest truth, there might also be some Pokemon GO updates, if I can manage to find some rare catches. I'm looking at you, Dragonite!)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Announced as New York City's Official Family Ambassadors

NYC & Company, New York City’s official destination marketing organisation, together with Nickelodeon, announced the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are the newest Official NYC Family Ambassadors — part of a yearlong campaign to highlight New York City as a family-friendly destination. In 2015 New York City welcomed an estimated 17.5 million family visitors, a nearly two percent projected increase over 2014, and family travel to NYC is expected to continue to grow in 2016 to reach approximately 17.7 million family visitors. Since the launch of the Family Ambassador program in 2009, family visitation to New York City has grown by 32.6 percent and is currently 30 percent of total visitation to New York City. For kid-friendly NYC travel materials, guides and itineraries, visit www.nycgo.com/family

“Last year we saw a record number of visitors here in New York City thanks to our various attractions and the art and entertainment that can be found around every corner of every street in every borough. Most importantly, however, are the 17.5 million family visitors who came to this city to expose their children and relatives to the diverse culture this City offers. Furthermore, the city’s public spaces and parks make it an ideal place for families to bond and strengthen their relationships. I invite all families to New York so that we can share with you all we have to offer,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio.

“We’re excited to enlist the help of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, four dynamic and adventurous New Yorkers, to welcome family travelers to NYC,” said Fred Dixon, President and CEO of NYC & Company. “Known by visitors from around the world, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are the perfect guides to help families discover the vibrancy and excitement throughout the five boroughs.”

Families visiting NYC during the summer can take advantage of seasonal events including SummerStage Kids, Big Apple Barbecue Block Party, Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks, the US Open Tennis Championships and more. In addition, free and low-cost outdoor activities in NYC’s parks, along NYC’s waterfronts and beyond add to the attractiveness of visiting NYC during the summer.

“As native New Yorkers, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are the perfect choice to encourage visitors from around the globe to find their own adventures in the city that never sleeps,” said Pam Kaufman, Chief Marketing Officer and President of Consumer Products, Nickelodeon. “We are proud to continue our longstanding partnership with NYC & Company, which leverages our beloved characters to showcase the best of what New York City has to offer for kids and families.”

The Official NYC Family Ambassador campaign will be promoted through out-of-home media in the five boroughs, Boston, Chicago, and 23 shopping malls in America; social media engagement using the hashtag #nycgofamily; TV commercials running in NYC taxicabs; and additional activations throughout the year.

The Family Ambassador program was created in 2009 to help position New York City as a welcoming family-friendly destination, encourage families to visit year-round and invite those who have already visited New York City to return and enjoy all of the new attractions the City has to offer. The Teenage Mutant Nina Turtles are the eighth Family Ambassador after Dora and Friends in 2015, Curious George in 2014, Where’s Waldo? in 2013, The Muppets in 2012, The Smurfs in 2011, Dora the Explorer in 2010 and Sesame Street in 2009.

Classic & Modern Ninja Turtles to Meet in March 27 Event

In an event that has been hinted to us for quite a while now, the time is near for the ultimate TMNT crossover, featuring the 1980s Turtles and voice cast together with the 2012 Turtles and voice cast. The new episode will see the 2D Turtles from the 80s get the modern CGI treatment, while the CGI modern Turtles will also get the 2D animation treatment.

From a press release sent out yesterday:
Worlds collide as the voice cast of the 1980s Turtles, Cam Clarke, Rob Paulsen, Barry Gordon and Townsend Coleman joins forces as Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo, respectively, in “Trans-Dimensional Turtles,” a new episode of Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles debuting Sunday, March 27, at 11:00 a.m. (ET/PT). In this new half-hour episode, the Turtles are transported to another dimension where they meet their ‘80s alternate-reality counterparts. Actor Pat Fraley also reunites with the ‘80s cast for the first time since the original series premiered to reprise his role as Krang.

In “Trans-Dimensional Turtles,” all eight Turtles must battle to eliminate both the ‘80s Krang and Kraang Sub-Prime.  After meeting their ‘80s counterparts in a 2D-animation world, the entire clan moves back into a CG-animation dimension, giving their new retro friends a taste of their realm. Additionally, in another dimensional twist, the episode will offer a glimpse of the Turtles in a comic book world resembling Kevin Eastman’s Mirage Studios comic book series.
Left to Right: Barry Gordon, Pat Fraley, Cam Clarke, and Townsend Coleman

Mark Hamill Joins the TMNT Voice Cast

Once again proving that it has the greatest voice cast on television, the Nickelodeon TMNT series has added the Jedi Master himself, Mark Hamill, to its ranks. His character, Kavaxas—Demodragon of the Underworld, looks to be a real baddy.

While Mr. Hamill has been busy in recent weeks promoting a little movie called Star Wars: The Force Awakens, he's also taken to Instagram and Twitter to show some love for this new universe that he's entering.

No word on when exactly we can expect to hear from him, but new episodes start up again this Sunday, January 10!

Opening Day of "TMNT: Secrets of the Sewers" at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis

This past Saturday, Sept. 26, the brand new TMNT: Secrets of the Sewers exhibit at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis opened to the public. While I was not able to attend personally. fellow TMNT fan Steven Robert Murphy was able to go check it out and send in this report. Then click through to Facebook to see some fantastic pictures of the exhibit!

TMNT: Secrets of the Sewers will be open through April 10, 2016. If you're in or near Indianapolis, you'll definitely want to check it out!

"Turtles Count it Off"

Indianapolis has turned green... with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! The first thing you will see and hear when you visit the Children's Museum is the fab four with a mixture of songs that Turtle fans know and love. Ranging from "Awesome (You Are My Hero)" by Ya Kid K, "Shredder's Suite" from John Du Prez, even "Coming Out of Our Shells," and so much more! Kids were so hyped and I was getting hyped too!

I attended with my girlfriend and we met up with fellow fan, Michele Ivey. It was great to have a Turtle conversation with someone who has the same interest as you. Anyways, they announced on the intercom many times for all to shout "Booyakasha!" or the arrival of two of the Turtles to get a meet and greet opportunity for pictures.

Entering the exhibit was a blast of everything Turtle related. As soon as you walk in you notice many things that made the TMNT who they are now. A picture of issue 1 done by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird with some information about it and a display of comics. Next to the comic area was labeled "Cartoon," "Movie," and "World." Displaying stuff from that era from toys to VHS/laserdisc and trading cards. Walking more inside you would find a movie suit of Raphael. It looked like it came from the 3rd movie with heavy, heavy modifications due to the wear/tear it had during production, but a pleasant thing to see.

Now the fun part! So much adventures of many puzzles, games, mazes, and just having a shell of a time! The room literally looked like it came straight from the Nick cartoon. There was a woman dressed as April O' Neil (reporter 80's toon), and even the cheese phone!

Overall, I highly recommend that you should go to this. Take a load off of having fun and enjoy everything Turtle related that you love and adore!

Indianapolis Children's Museum to Open TMNT Exhibit Sept. 26

The Children's Museum of Indianapolis is proud to announce the upcoming opening of their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles interactive exhibit, in partnership with Nickelodeon. The exhibit will be opening on September 26. Click here for more information!

Here's a sneak peak at what you can expect to find when you visit the museum!

Preliminary concept digital model, Sewer Lair—the Dojo and Splinter’s Room

For 30 years, the TMNT have taught generations of fans that being part of a team lets us discover and exercise our own hidden strengths, and those of our teammates, helping us to achieve more together than we can on our own. In the Dojo, Splinter and Raphael will show visitors the value of hard work, practice, and knowing your enemy.  This area of the exhibit will have two main sections: the Dojo itself, where students may train in physical skills like balance, speed, and reflexes; and Splinter’s Room, where the focus is on knowledge and how to apply it.

Preliminary concept digital models, Sewer Lair—Common Room (1)

The Common Room is where the Turtles hang out, play games, and watch TV.  Here you’ll find the periscope that lets the team keep an eye on the New York streets above!  In this section of the exhibit, Leonardo helps visitors focus on careful planning and on the intellectual challenges of being a team leader.

Preliminary concept digital models, Sewer Lair—Common Room (2)

Leo has left the Turtles’ tPod laying nearby with his social media homepage up. Innocent passersby can, perhaps, take a look at the funny posts his brothers have made for him.

Preliminary concept digital model Sewer Lair—Donatello’s Workshop and Lab

In Donatello’s lab, try your hand at creative problem solving, as well as learning from mistakes. On Donnie’s desk, a series of circuit board puzzles yield lights, sounds, and views of hidden toy dioramas when successfully solved. A plinko-style board lets families experiment with different ways to get mutagen safely into its storage jar. Rotating tile panels feature a game of matching up sewer pipes to connect different areas of the lair.

Preliminary concept digital model, Sewer Lair—Common Room

All work and no play makes Jack a dull turtle—so Michelangelo is here to show off the fun side of the team’s training routine!  In this area, families can demonstrate their rad reflexes with Mikey’s pizza-making game, shred it up on the balance boards, connect miniature sewer pipes to solve a puzzle, and take a quiz to answer the question—WHICH TURTLE ARE YOU?

Preliminary concept digital models, Streets of New York—Family Challenge (1)

Preliminary concept digital models, Streets of New York—Family Challenge (2)

Once you’re trained, it’s time to hit the mean streets of New York City where villains lurk around every corner. Guided by other TMNT team members– from bat-wielding Casey Jones to ninja-in-training, April O’Neill—families work together to help the Turtles crack codes, maneuver through an alley rope maze, bash bad guys with a pizza thrower, and take on a video game challenge. Get the Shellraiser back to the lair, but you’ll need to work as a team to do it!

Life-size Turtles sculpts located in the Sewer Entry

Three-dimensional character models provide photo opportunities and welcome visitors into the exhibit space. Families will enter the exhibit through an archway that evokes the look and feel of the Turtles’ home: the sewer pipes beneath the streets of New York. This area will introduce important aspects of TMNT strategy, introduce the goals of the exhibit, and prepare families to enter the Sewer Lair and join the Turtle Team!
