"The Forever War" Officially Canceled

So, how many times can you get over the cancellation of the TMNT Adventures conclusion, "The Forever War"? Having first been canceled when the title itself was canceled in the mid-90s, and after several on-and-off broken promises throughout this decade that Mirage would publish the 5-part story, fans were given hope that the project might actually see the light of day as it was put on Mirage's schedule as part of the 25th anniversary celebration.

As such, a lead-up TPB was released in July that collected key stories that would lead up to what we would see in "The Forever War." Unfortunately, circumstances seemed to put the project into a holding pattern and its release once again became uncertain.

Now, in light of the recent purchase of the TMNT by Nickelodeon/Viacom, Mirage has been forced to make a definitive decision on the fate of this title, and, unfortunately, the news isn't good news.

In an e-mail to long-time TMNT fan Andrew M., Steve Murphy has made it official that the story is canceled and will not be published.

To get a look at the story that might've been, you can head on over to Murphy's old 5th Turtle blog to see a small glimpse.

I suppose this really isn't unexpected, but it remains disappointing. Once again the Turtles don't get a proper farewell. Alas...

  1. Not unexpected, but shitty nonetheless.

  2. Oh, I could just cuss up a storm right now over this, but I don't think/know that would be appropriate for this blog. Suffice to say, I feel like Mirage has really given its fans the shaft in this deal.

  4. Mirage has the right to publish this, and I wish they would. If not, I hope the whole thing leaks onto the net. I'd rather pay for it, but I wanna know what happens! I've been waiting for *checks watch* 14 years for this!

  5. Kyle - The books aren't complete, so it's a more complicated issue than just printing it or "leaking" it, which they most definitely couldn't do when there's a $60 million deal in the middle of the situation.

  6. hey remember those forever war prints murph sold on ebay that were from a comic con? im sure he didn't foresee this falling through but it really burns me up to have paid good money for that which did not materialize (again)...

  8. Well CRAP. It was there last night, now it's completely gone! That's horrible. :(

I think the fact that "The Forever War" isn't getting published is more reason to enjoy the print you were able to get, rather than simply being something that "did not materialize."

  9. Honestly this was the only thing I was worried about in regards to the Viacom/Nickelodeon merger.

It didn't feel like their heart was truly in it to finish these books anyway, so now I'm sure with bigger and larger things happening such as the merger we'll never see the book.

    This is such crap.

I would really like to know if there's someone to write to that has any pull in this department and express how much I as well as others would like to see this book.

  11. Jeeze, this is a real shame though of course not unexpected at this point. It likewise sucks that Murph took down his blog, regardless of him having ceased to write on it. There's such a sincre finality to that. I can't see a reason why Peter wouldn't do everyone (especially Murph) as solid and make Forever War among the 18 books in a year... or is there a discrepancy that the books have to be in the Mirage continuity.

  12. I haven't seen it stated officially, but I do think it cancellation of "The Forever War" may have had something to do with it not being in Mirage continuity.

And you can still get to all of Murph's site through Google's cache, but who knows when it might drop out of the cache. I spent about two hours today saving the whole damn thing.

  13. yes, its nice to have the print. but, they were being sold to promote the upcoming series, so it feels like the wool pulled over the eyes, yknow? Like, getting even more excited over nothing ... buying the promo print, writing in to express thanks that its going to come out, buy the Future Tense TPB, and then nothing. Pretty rotten feeling.

  14. Oh, what fools we were for expecting any sort of closure of anything handled in-house.

I have to admit, it gives me little faith in anything Laird or Mirage does in the future right now-- how are we supposed to invest ourselves in it when we know it could just fade into nothingness with no real resolution?

Here's hoping that Nick will at least not leave us hanging.
